“Another 100,” Aiden complimented me as I slotted papers into the front pocket of my binder, cleaning up the array of study material laid out on his couch and coffee table. “I can tell you’re studying hard on your own time. Your grades have really improved.”

It was true. I was getting closer and closer to getting that A I had to have. But somehow, I could only bring a half-hearted smile to show my pleasure at my success.

“What’s up?” Aiden asked immediately, grabbing my hand as my fingers fiddled with the rings of the binder.

“Nothing! I’m really starting to understand the material, that’s all. My friend gave me a book that’s a lot easier to read than the course textbook.” I started to pack the binder in my bookbag, then stopped and turned to face Aiden. “Okay, that’s not all. My parents kind of noticed that I’ve been spending all my weekends here, instead of going home for some of them, and they asked if I’d met someone. I don’t like lying to them, so I told them yes. They didn’t press me to tell them who at the time, but now my mom is saying I should bring my boyfriend by the house to meet them. I told her we’re not really there yet, but she likes to know the men in my life that last for more than a couple weeks.”

“So.” A statement? A question? Both? “Do you want to tell them?”

“I mean, we have to, sometime.” I shrugged, swallowing the pit of nervousness that gripped my stomach whenever I thought about what Daddy would say. “Isn’t sooner better than later? I know it’s still early and everything, but I can’t keep telling half-truths forever.”

“I understand,” Aiden said so carefully that I knew already he didn’t want to tell them. Still, I listened to his counteroffer. “Let’s not rush into this, though. I want to know where I stand before they know. Give Millenium Law Firm in LA a chance to email me about an interview, and if that doesn’t come after a few weeks, we’ll tell them. I’m just saying, let’s figure us out before we try to explain us to them. I don’t even know for sure where I’ll be soon - still a Professor or hired at a Law firm.”

That made a lot of sense, and I immediately regretted how hastily I had made the suggestion. I really hadn’t thought anything through before mentioning it.

That was part of what made us good together, though. I was a little impetuous, and Aiden was logical. He could help me reason things out before jumping into them headfirst.

“Yeah, that’s a good idea. And I can wait and see if I get accepted into Tulane Law School for sure.” Neither of us mentioned the elephant in the room. Millennium Law Firm was in LA. Tulane Law School was in New Orleans.

A problem for another day, because, as usual, Aiden had wine. This time, he had bought a bottle of red and one of rosé.
